WAYS TO RAISE YOUR HOME HUMIDITY

Humidity, the amount of water vapor in the air, is a unique atmospheric condition. While it can be frustrating in the summer months due to its abundance, its absence can make winters tough. During the dry season, the natural humidity level of our homes significantly drops. This dryness makes the winters difficult, causing drier skin, itchy throats, and essentially affects comfort and overall health. To overcome this problem, we need to naturally raise humidity in a room. Here is a quick guide.

PROBLEMS DUES TO LOW HUMIDITY

If the humidity level in your home is low, you will start to notice issues such as dry, itchy skin, chapped lips and a sore throat when you first wake up. Low humidity levels can also dry out your mucous membranes. If someone has asthma, low humidity can cause serious health problems.

Low humidity levels can be the reason you see damage in your home. The wood work can warp and possibly split at different places. It can even cause your wallpaper to crack and fall off your walls.

Another potential side effect is when low humidity levels in your home trick your body into feeling colder. The temperature is registering the same, but the dryness of the air causes your body to not store its heat. This in turn tends to make you raise the temperature in your home ultimately leading to increased utility cost.

WAYS TO RAISE HUMIDITY

Once you learn the repercussions of having a low humidity level, it is time to take action to increase these levels. The following are suggestions on how to humidify a room naturally, so you and your family have a healthier environment.

When someone takes a shower, don’t turn on the bathroom exhaust fan. Instead use a room fan to spread the damp air out of the bathroom into other rooms of your home. Not only are you are increasing the humidity level in an easy way, but you also save money by not turning your heat up.

  • When you use the dishwasher, don’t use the drying cycle. Leave the door open to allow the dishes to air dry and the steam will move into the air of the kitchen. Once again, you are able to add moisture to the air with a simple task you most likely have to do every few days.

  • For houseplants, the best humidity is to keep them watered and occasionally spray them with a mist of water throughout the day.

  • Put water in shallow pans and place them near your sunny window and vents. Keep these out of reach so a mess isn’t made.

  • Use a spray bottle and mist the air throughout your home. Only spray what can quickly evaporate to prevent damaging your beddings, furniture, and carpets.

  • Use a humidifier designed for a single room.

Winter season brings with it harsh temperatures that reek havoc on you and your families health, so it is vital that you do your part to keep illness away. Be sure to put these tips to good use.
